Castell Henllys Iron Age Fort

Dyfed

This reconstructed Iron Age fort in Dyfed, surrounded by herb gardens and paddocks with ancient breeds of sheep, contains four reconstructed round houses and animal pens. It is administered by Pembrokeshire National Park, which emphasises learning. Teaching is mostly in Welsh, and subjects studied include cooking, weaving and costume, animal husbandry and weaponry, as well as building construction. Children are given an intensive varied vision of life in the Iron Age. During the summer holiday students come from York University and Llandeillo College for archaeological excavations, and family visits are extremely popular.

The staff are versatile: the senior teacher does the accounts while the wattle and daub maker leads the ‘dancing’.  DM
