Stirling Castle

Stirling

One of the most outstanding fortress castles in Scotland and a former royal residence, the castle is a major site run by Historic Scotland. Situated in an impressive position with commanding views, it occupies a key central geographical location for visitors amidst several other important historic sites. Historically fascinating for over 600 years, it presents numerous opportunities for a wide range of interpretation, educational activities and events, including technology days (run by the Construction Industry Training Board), Gaelic-speaking days (funded by Comunn na Gaidhlig, a charitable organisation based in Inverness to coordinate Gaelic development), careers days for school leavers to discuss tourism and hospitality, and medieval music workshops. Living History is very popular, enlivened by a wardrobe of about 40 costumes and two large, fullyequipped spaces for educational use. Dancing is encouraged as well as a developing interest in traditional crafts, such as spinning and weaving. The school pack, Ideas and Information for Teachers, is a comprehensive package to help with visits and offers historical background and a variety of routes. Links are currently being made to the English and Irish curricula.  JH
