Hackney Building Exploratory
London
This is a recent example of an urban studies centre, established as a private initiative in 1997. Here members of the local community, and particularly children, are able through a series of models and maps to learn about the borough they live in: how it developed historically, why the transport system functions as it does, which ethnic communities have lived there in the past and live there now, which streets and individual buildings were bombed in the war, how the place is changing –and how the services in an individual house are provided. Organised with extreme imagination and offering a lively programme of events, the Hackney Building Exploratory is a model of how information about one’s locality can be presented in an enjoyable and interesting way – so that the built environment becomes something that everyone can understand and sympathise with, and realise that all of us can have an impact on the places we live and work in.
