Clumber Park

Nottinghamshire

Within the large landscaped park surrounding the demolished mansion of the Dukes of Newcastle and now owned by the National Trust, the Learning Officer with a team of volunteers, organises an active programme for both schools (from up to 35 miles around, including many children who are almost completely unfamiliar with the countryside) and adults. The programme includes studies of the habitat and of the park’s sustainability, story- telling based on the landscape, estate history days, events such as a Fungi Week and a Wildlife Weekend studying hedgehogs and how to look after them, bats and spiders (in the company of a ‘spiderman’), a Bug Day and a Bird Day. The activities are not restricted to the natural habitat, embracing a Song Project for schools working with a professional music director, an architectural quiz trail, and archaeology weekends in collaboration with archaeologists from Nottingham County Council.  GW
